Meeting No. 3

Today we held our third meeting. There were some technical problems occurring with the survey form so we decided to take it off the blog and host it somewhere else (on another website). The survey results will then be collated and put into our proposal. We set a goal for the submission of our proposal: by 12 June 2008. We had a mini-discussion about having a jumble sale after the main auction event. This jumble sale will be selling the items left behind, with consent of the item owners. The money will then be donated to a needy fund. To increase ways of collecting feedback, the group planned to include another tagboard in the blog. This second tagboard will be for others to put down what items they might be exchanging at the event.

The auction will be on 9 July 2008. Duration: 1.5 hours. (This details are tentative, however.)

The meeting ended with tasks given out to each group.

Tasks:

Research: unwanted items that teenagers throw away the most (in good condition)
Blogging: survey completed and hosted, with no problems
Event Coordinators: list of items needed to prepare for the event (tables, chairs, etc.); the logistics involved; flow of events (procedure)
Marketing: Phrase 2 -- powerpoint) Phrase 1 -- publicising this blog to other students (getting them to link up to this blog)

The next meeting will be on 13 June 2008, 10-12.30.

Procedure of the event
The whole exchange program will be run like an auction. People who are interested in putting their things up for auction will register at the booth before the auction starts. They will be basically filling up a form which includes their name, class and contact number. It will be on first come first serve basis. So the first person will get to auction his/her item first. Registration will take about 30minutes before the auction.

One can choose to auction it's item off or just use it to exchange. Those who're not auctioning but just there to exchange their items with things put up on auction would not need to register.

When the auction starts, the names of the people will be called up one by one. They will give a short description about the item.The audience will then raise their items( just like how people raise their hands in usual auction) if they are interested in exchanging. Upon seeing the items raised, the person will have the right to choose which person to exchange with.

For example, there's 4 person A, B, C and D. All 4 of them registered respectively. So since A registered first, she gets to auction her item first. Let's say she is auctioning off a keychain.Upon seeing B raising up a teddy bear and C raising up a toy car, she decided to trade with C for the toy car. When both parties agree to the trade, the deal is done.

After the trade, C can decide to auction the keychain she'd gotten from the previous exchange or keep it. If she decide to auction it off, the whole cycle will start again. She can only do that after B's turn since B registered before her. But if she decide to keep it, she will be cancel off the auction list and it'll be D's turn.

Note: No money will be involve in this auction.

Meeting No.2

We had our 2nd meeting today. We discussed on our previous meeting agenda and had a major change in our project. We are no longer doing an exchange programme but a mini scale auction. We decided to change it to the mini auction because, after discussing, we found out that there are many problems that will surface during the exchange itself.

Though we're doing it the auction way, the idea of exchanging is still the same. You can still exhange your unwanted things( in good working condition), for things that you want.

Next meeting will be on Monday(2/6) 10- 12.30 pm in school.

Research
SOURCES OF RUBBISH
The 'Major Sources of Rubbish' chart shows the types of rubbish surveyed and the proportion they represent of the total rubbish surveyed.

PLASTIC & MISCELLANEOUS RUBBISH
Plastics were the most common rubbish items followed by miscellaneous stuff. Let's look into the details and see what type of plastic and miscellaneous stuff does people throw away.

As we can see from the pie chart. Many things that can be recycled are being thrown away. Some are even things that can be reused. Take for example items from the miscelleneous rubbish found, clothing and furnitures. These are things that we can exchange with one another. Certain things to us may be rubbish but to someone else , it may be something useful.

Thus, when the rubbish is useful to someone else, it is no longer a rubbish.This will definitely help reduce the amount of waste generated if everyone could exchange items and convert them into something useful instead of just throwing them away.

Meeting No. 1

Today, we had our first official meeting together with our mentors. We updated the mentors with what we'd done for the week. Which are:

- the survey questions
- proposal draft
- the category of the items

One of the question the mentors brought up was ' How to determine the value of the item?'. We brainstorm about it and decided that we will come up with a price chart. Research would be done on the prices of items.

We also discussed about how we want to carry out the survey. Pros and Cons of carrying out the survey on a survey hosting site was brought up.
Pros:
- It is convenient to collate and show the result.
- It is easier to host the survey on the hosting site than on blog.
Cons:
- People might not be visit the hosting site.

Due to the fact that people would not visit the hosting site, we'd decided to host the survey on our blog itself as it'll be more convenient for people to do the survey.

The next meeting would be held on Wednesday from 9-12a.m. in school.

INTRODUCTION
Hey there! We're students from Riverside Secondary, Class 3/5 and we're blogging here as part of the Youth for earth environmental competition. We'll be basically blogging about everything that we're doing for this project. So without further ado, i shall introduce our project.

Our idea is to organize an exchange programme within the school which will be held somewhere in July. This idea came from our lovely vice chairperson, yihui, (otherwise known as yinni the maid.) Kudos to her!! She was surfing the net the other day and happen to come across a website which allow people to exchange things they don't want, for something they want with people around the world. So with the idea, we modify and would be doing it on a smaller scale in school. This programme allow students to exchange things they don't want, not with the people around the world, but with fellow school mates.

There is an increase in the amount of domestic waste over the past few years and with this programme, we can definitely help reduce the amount of waste disposed.

Yihui and myself would be the overall in charge of the project and we will also be the one blogging! Our class which consist of 40 people would be involved in this project but there are 12 main people who will be in charge. The 12 is divided into 4 department as follows:

MARKETING: Vinus, Eugene and Shimei.

RESEARCH: Meroshini, Alicia and Michelle.

BLOGGING: Yihui, Siying and Charmaine.

EVENT COORDINATOR: Weiloke, Sherilyn and James.
